“THAT RARITY OF RARITIES:
A GENUINELY ROMANTIC FILM”

– Andrew Sarris

“More than 40 years old, François Truffaut's whirling dervish remains an ageless beauty... of lyrical visual flair and whirlpool of emotions.”
– Ed Gonzalez, Village Voice
François Truffaut’s JULES AND JIM
starring JEANNE MOREAU   OSKAR WERNER   HENRI SERRE

Across two decades and through World War I, Oskar Werner (the Austrian Jules) and Henri Serre (the French Jeem) remain obsessed with Jeanne Moreau ("as variable as a prism that gives off lights and glints as she puts into the role of the woman a bewitching evanescent quality" – The New York Times) whose enigmatic smile matches the Greek statue of their youth. The gay and flighty Catherine (Moreau: "she's not immoral, she's absolute.") was a dazzling change of pace to the actress's previous gloom-ridden roles, while her rendition of Le Tourbillon put her on the musical charts as well.

The worldwide smash success of the 29-year-old filmmaker's third feature (adapted from the septuagenarian Henri-Pierre Roché's first novel) vaulted him from New Wave phenomenon to the front line of international directors. This new 35mm print was struck by Janus Films on the occasion of their 50th anniversary.

Scene from JULES AND JIM

"Truffaut comes closest to the spirit and sublimity of his mentor, Jean Renoir, and the result is a masterpiece of the New Wave." – Dave Kehr

"Elliptical, full of wit and radiance, this is the best movie ever made about what most of us think of as the Scott Fitzgerald period." – Pauline Kael

"Remains one of Truffaut's most enjoyable movies… A strangely successful mélange of nostalgic period style and New Wave innovation, the film alternates, like its characters, at breakneck speed between tristesse and joie de vivre."Time Out (London)

"The film that made me the most fondly jealous of François Truffaut. I wish I'd made it." – Jean Renoir
