Interview with THE IN-LAWS Screenwriter Andrew Bergman
Wednesday, February 13
Following the screening, Film Forum’s Director of repertory programming, Bruce Goldstein, will moderate an interview with THE IN-LAWS screenwriter Andrew Bergman.
Andrew Bergman’s first big break was as writer of the story and original screenplay of Tex X, later re-titled Blazing Saddles. Warner Bros originally approached Bergman to write a sequel for Freebie and the Bean, but instead, he came up with The In-Laws as a vehicle for Falk and Arkin, who wanted to work together. Bergman later directed such films as Fletch, starring Chevy Chase, Honeymoon in Vegas, with Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker, Striptease, with Demi Moore, and The Freshman, with Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick.
Bergman earned a Ph.D in American history from University of Wisconin-Madison, writing his dissertation, We’re in the Money: Depression America and Its Films, a study of Depression-era Hollywood films, published by NYU Press. He has also written four novels featuring detective Jack LeVine: The Big Kiss-off of 1944, Tender Is LeVine, Hollywood and LeVine, and Sleepless Nights.
