“Do I possess some inner destructive demon, or is it simply that love is the devil?”
– Francis Bacon

One of the 20th century’s greatest painters, Francis Bacon, was at the height of his celebrity during London’s swinging ‘60s. Sir Derek Jacobi (I, CLAUDIUS; HAMLET) gives a searing performance as the fiercely cruel artist whose passion for his work is nearly exceeded by his obsession with George Dyer (played by a pre-Bond Daniel Craig) — a darkly handsome petty thief who becomes his lover and the model for many of his most renowned paintings. Maybury, a close associate of Derek Jarman, recreates the British demi-monde of artists, rent boys, and bar flies who fed Bacon’s controversial, tortured artistic vision.
