Since its founding in 2003 as a NY-based cultural institution specializing in Middle Eastern film programming, ArteEast has become a leading organization advocating for and supporting Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) artists’ engagement with U.S.-based arts communities and audiences. Through strategic partnerships, exhibitions, content rich online platforms, including a legacy ArteArchive program preserving and presenting over 20 years of film and video from and about the SWANA region, and much more, ArteEast plays an essential role in bridging a community of understanding between the two regions.
Cinema Arabiyya is series of lesser known, or just lesser shown, films from the Arab world, selected to challenge and excite curious cinephiles, expand their knowledge of international cinema and provide a greater understanding of Arab arts and culture.
Hicham Awad is a writer, editor, and film programmer living in New York. In addition to teaching courses on film at The Cooper Union, Awad is on the editorial board of Narrow Margin, a quarterly film publication, and is Managing Editor of e-flux Books. Most recently, he published on the film criticism of filmmaker Jean-Claude Biette and translated some of his work into English.
