small is beautiful

From Annus Horribilis* to 2021 and Beyond
We miss you. But with your help… we’ll still be here for you.

This has been a traumatic year. People have lost friends and family to Covid-19. Racial injustice continues to plague our nation. The losses of Congressman John Lewis and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg are deeply felt. Climate change manifests itself everywhere.

As of this writing we don’t know when we will reopen.
But we will reopen.

Please help us relight our screens with a 100% tax-deductible gift
to our small is beautiful campaign.

We have been closed since March 15, but our staff is keeping busy creating a Virtual Cinema program for streaming new and classic films and hosting virtual Q&As with filmmakers. Coming up virtually or on screen (or both) in 2020/early 2021 are these great movies:

MY REMBRANDT POITIER ASIA

  • MY REMBRANDT: An absorbing, often hilarious, eye-opening exploration of the rarefied world of Rembrandt collectors
  • POITIER: Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Sidney Poitier’s major movie debut
  • ASIA: A mother-daughter drama from Israel starring Shira Haas, Emmy Award-nominated star of the TV miniseries Unorthodox
  • BILL TRAYLOR: CHASING GHOSTS: The little-known story of an artist born into slavery whose work is today recognized internationally for its rich imagination and wit
  • CARY GRANT: A retrospective of the screen’s most debonair leading man
  • RENÉ CLAIR: Retrospective of the comedies/fantasies/musicals from France’s innovative director, from the silent era to the ’60s
  • MIFUNE 101: 30-film retrospective of the Japanese superstar Toshiro Mifune, including rare films imported from Japan especially for this series
  • THERE IS NO EVIL: A gripping drama in four vignettes exploring the societal cost of Iran’s death penalty
  • LA PISCINE: (1969) New 4K restoration of the French crime drama starring Alain Delon and Romy Schneider

MIFUNE 101 THERE IS NO EVIL LA PISCINE

With your generous help we will get through this time of unprecedented difficulty — and meet once again in the dark — watching movies that enrich our lives.
