Sigmund Freud’s 1890’s probings of the human mind as a psychological detective film noir, with elegantly bearded Monty (in his last good role and picture) treating Susannah York, her dreams stunningly recreated in surrealistic and expressionistic styles – and coming to conclusions dramatically rejected by his colleagues. Nobel Prize winner Jean-Paul Sartre’s original script would presumably have run 5 hours.
