A celebration of New York independent filmmaker Shirley Clarke (1919-1997) on this, the 100th anniversary of her birth. This program will feature short films, unfinished work, and home movies from early in Clarke’s career, including A Dance in the Sun (1953), Clarke’s first film; The Rose and the Players (1956), a screen test for a never-completed film, with Anna Sokolow choreographing young dancers; A Moment in Love (1957), also choreographed by Sokolow; World Kitchen (1957), made with D.A. Pennebaker for the Brussels World’s Fair but never screened; A Scary Time (1960), commissioned but later rejected by UNICEF; and Skyscraper (1959), her Academy Award-nominated short documentary.
