A naturalist fantasy in kaleidoscopic colors, as a family holidays in the Stockholm archipelago. An outlier, even in her broad and varied body of work, Zetterling’s only children’s film was inspired by Goethe’s theory of color. Apart from a screening at the Nordic Film Days in Lübeck, Germany, it was only shown once on television, two years after it was made, at 8pm on a Friday, leading critics to wonder just who the intended audience was. “In 1969, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda had opened the doors of perception in Easy Rider. That scene [the LSD trip at the cemetery during Mardi Gras in New Orleans] is nothing compared to THE MOON IS A GREEN CHEESE, which must have been challenging even during the 1970s.” -Nina Widerberg, Swedish Film Database.
