Sweden, 1944
Directed by Alf Sjöberg
Screenplay by Ingmar Bergman
Starring Zetterling, Stig Järrel, Alf Kjellin
DCP. Approx. 87 min.

Painfully adolescent Alf Kjellin is terrorized by his sadistic Latin teacher (nicknamed Caligula) and finds solace only in the arms of local girl Mai Zetterling, but… With a screenplay by 25-year-old Bergman, who also served as assistant director, it was Sweden’s first international hit in two decades, and shot Zetterling to international fame. Zetterling considered this her finest screen role.

Reviews

“Stereotypically, the blonde, petite, and talented Zetterling enchanted moviegoers and theater patrons alike, judging by the reviewers’ opinions.”
– Mariah Larsson, A Cinema of Obsession: The Life and Work of Mai Zetterling

“Emotionally haunting.”
