The New York Transit Museum is the largest museum in the United States devoted to urban public transportation history and one of the premier institutions of its kind in the world. Founded in 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial celebration, the Museum is housed in a historic 1936 subway station in Downtown Brooklyn and has grown into a beloved cultural institution with a collection of more than one million objects. As it marks its 50th anniversary, the Transit Museum continues to preserve and share the stories of mass transportation and the people who make it possible through exhibitions, educational programs, public events, and one-of-a-kind experiences.
