Starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly

4K RESTORATION

(1944, Charles Vidor) Hijinks in the fashion world, with up-and-coming model Rita Hayworth at her copper-tressed Tech peak; while Gene Kelly, as a boorish producer, was his own choreographer for the first time, notably for his “alter ego” dance via superimposition – “the toughest thing I did in the movies” – with Phil Silvers and Eve Arden at their scene-stealing best, and a great Jerome Kern score. DCP. Approx 107 mins.

Reviews

“A lush 1944 musical vehicle built for Rita Hayworth at the height of her popularity by Columbia’s specialist in glitz, Charles Vidor.”
– Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

“Offers plenty of style: Kelly dances up a dream, Hayworth is elegance incarnate, the Jerome Kern/Ira Gershwin score – including the marvellous ‘Long Ago and Far Away’ – is tuneful throughout, and the whole thing, especially the comic stuff from Silvers and Arden, is executed with considerable brio. And Rudolph Maté's Technicolor photography is faultless.”
– Time Out (London)

“Rainbows the screen with dazzling décor!”
– The New York Times
