WINNER, GOLDEN LION, 2025 VENICE FILM FESTIVAL

Tolstoyan in spirit—“Happy families are all alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”—iconic indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s 14th feature film gently dramatizes the earnest patience and needful deceptions employed when three sets of adult children and their parents try to connect across estrangement and other forms of distance. Patient too is Jarmusch’s sympathetic eye and ear, as scenes play out in text, subtext, gesture, and silence—at times the best and only love language for these characters.

Reviews

“DELICATE AND LOVELY. [A] funny, tender, astutely observed jewel of a family triptych... quietly floors you... This is a unique portrait of families and their foibles... touched by warmth and generosity of spirit.”
– David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“A film of quiet charm, anchored by a scatter of joyful performances. Cate Blanchett plays Tim as if she's Julie Andrews cast in a Harold Pinter play, Tom Waits has great fun dosing out the gradual audience revelation that he's an elderly teenager wondering how his boring-as-hell kids got so old, while Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat smoulder as cool, cosmopolitan twins who know each other as well as they know themselves.”
– Lee Marshall, Screen

“A FILM TO SAVOR... A deeply pleasing and gently quietest triptych on the subject of family, [Jarmusch] is giving us something new and personal.”
– Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“CHARMING... Consistently beautiful.”
– Jessica Kiang, Variety
