Tolstoyan in spirit—“Happy families are all alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”—iconic indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s 14th feature film gently dramatizes the earnest patience and needful deceptions employed when three sets of adult children and their parents try to connect across estrangement and other forms of distance. Patient too is Jarmusch’s sympathetic eye and ear, as scenes play out in text, subtext, gesture, and silence—at times the best and only love language for these characters.
