Directed by Laurence Olivier

(1948) In Laurence Olivier’s celebrated interpretation, “the tragedy of a man who could not make up his mind”, but also one definitely Freudian, its Oedipal slant reinforced by the casting (Olivier was 39, Eileen Herlie as his mother was 27). Olivier’s vigorous staging includes a nervously mobile camera and electrifying dueling, with the Dane’s final leap onto the king saved for the last day and a single take. Academy Awards for Best Picture, Director and Actor. DCP restoration. Approx. 153 min.
