江戸川乱歩全集 恐怖奇形人間

Japan, 1969
Directed by Teruo Ishii
Based on the novels by Edogawa Rampo

Medical student Teruo Yoshida, after waking up in an asylum with no memory, disguises himself as a newly-dead man who’s his spitting image. Things get even stranger when he finds himself on a Dr. Moreau-esque island, where macabre experiments transpire. Based on Strange Tale of Panorama Island (1926) and The Demon of the Lonely Isle (1930) by Edogawa Rampo, the Japanese Edgar Allan Poe.

Reviews

“As a cinematic rendering of the gothic, fetishistic, horrific, and sublime — erotic, grotesque nonsense — it is unparalleled.”
–  Screen Slate

“Teruo Ishii’s Horrors of Malformed Men contains one of cinema’s most straightforwardly stark raving villains.”
