LOVE ’65

Starring Keve Hjelm, Ben Carruthers, Ann-Marie Gyllenspetz, Evabritt Strandberg
Approx. 96 mins.
Widerberg’s most freewheeling film, mixing scenes of fantasy and realism that evoke Fellini’s 8½, LOVE ’65 is a self-referential work about a film director whose marriage and career are crumbling simultaneously, leading him to seek solace in an affair with an American woman. The actor in the film-within-a-film is played by Ben Carruthers, star of John Cassavetes’ SHADOWS. Using the Cassavetes film as a model, much of the dialogue in LOVE ’65 was improvised.

Reviews
“The dialogue in LOVE ’65 is more acute, perceptive, and honest than in any other Swedish film of the 1960s.”
– Peter Cowie
“The characters are emotional cripples desperately trying to connect in an idyllic setting, the imaginatively choreographed camera probing their fragile psyches.”
– Ted Shen, Chicago Reader
