Rarely screened outside of Taiwan, this brisk and biting romantic comedy reveals a lesser-known side of the New Taiwan Cinema with its humorously insightful and feminist critique of conformist culture. A declared favorite of its firebrand star, Sylvia Chang, MY FAVORITE SEASON tells the story of an independent career woman grappling with the complications spiraling from her pregnancy to a married man and her plan to find a surrogate husband. Co-written by Hou Hsiao-hsien and based on a novel by long-time Hou collaborator Chu T’ien-wen, MY FAVORITE SEASON is a unheralded classic by cinematographer-turned-director Chen Kun-ho whose work lensing Hou Hsiao-hsien’s first works clearly influenced the film’s poignantly evocative documentary-style scenes of Eighties Taipei.
