“This 1937 film is about a street where gentlemen are an event, and where the dashing, gallant Franchot Tone devastates the maiden ladies. As in so much of James M. Barrie, the sensitive, all-knowing woman (Katharine Hepburn) gets the vain, infantile male. (Why does she bother? Well, in the Barrie world, that's the only kind of man there is.) Underneath all the propriety, there's a dismaying and rather grim view of human relationships.
