Varda’s intimate conversations with a group of widows paints a portrait of Varda’s own grief, putting absence and loss into words. The stories are emotional, many tragic, and Varda approaches them with her signature empathy, staying unusually quiet and absent for much of the runtime as the women move through joy, anguish, pain, and love. And in her own way, Varda reflects on her own widowhood, 15 years after the death of Jacques Demy. The film was originally conceived as a video installation for the Fondation Cartier.

Made for an exhibition, “The Living and the Artificial” at the Avignon Festival, this playful experiment short film is about a real estate tour of a large vacant apartment in a building that was formerly a rest home. A series of surreal scenes moves between past and present. “This film came out of me with great jubilation,” said Varda, “this totally free film born of a stream of associations and impressions.”
