Con-man/grifter Furankî Sakai ends up as the fixer in a busy 1860s brothel; a prostitute sees love suicide as a way to clear her debts; another who finds she’s engaged to both a father and a son; plus a real-life anti-shogunate super-patriot played by eventual superstar Yûjirô Ishihara. Ranked 5th in Kinema Junpo’s 1999 ranking of Japan’s greatest.
