THE BEACHES OF AGNÈS

France, 2008
Written and directed by Agnès Varda
Starring Agnès Varda, André Lubrano, Blaise Fournier, Vincent Fournier
In French with English subtitles
Approx. 110 min.

“If we opened people up, we’d find landscapes. If we opened me up, we’d find beaches,” says Agnès Varda at the beginning of this self portrait that may have been intended as her farewell to filmmaking. It wasn’t. As she takes us through her life and career, moving freely and non-chronologically, creating playful set pieces, Varda is as energetic and inventive as ever.

Reviews

“This is not an autobiography, although it is about her lifetime. She closes it by saying, ‘I am alive, and I remember.’ The film is her memories, evoked by footage from her films, and visits to the places and people she filmed. But that makes it sound too straightforward. The film is a poem, a song, a celebration... This is a great, loving, uplifting film. It provides an ideal of a life well-lived.”
