On the eve of her marriage to a wealthy Chinese businessman, Madame Jolie Chin (Yao Wei), hostess at the Nuits de Paris nightclub in 1960s Taipei, celebrates her retirement with the club’s taxi dancers and sketchy clients — with flashbacks of 20 years of memories. Based on a short story by Pai Hsien-yung, one of the most influential Chinese writers of the 60s and 70s.

Reviews

“An evocation of repressed memories of happiness imbued with sadness… Director Pai Ching-jui, the first person from Taiwan to study film In Italy, wrote a new chapter in Taiwan cinema, paving the way for the new wave directors of the 80s.”
— Wayne Wang

“Remarkable for its evocation of beauty, sadness and pain in a realistic depiction of the seedy nightclub world.”
