THE MAN FROM MAJORCA

Sweden, 1984
Written and Directed by Bo Widerberg
Based on the 1978 novel The Pig Party by Leif G. W. Persson
Starring Sven Wollter, Tomas von Brömssen, Håkan Serner, Ernst Günther, Thomas Hellberg
Approx. 102 min.

Widerberg has acknowledged that with its grungy but charismatic buddy cops, its traffic-filled city car chases, its dry comic tone, and the elaborate conspiracy at its core, THE MAN FROM MAJORCA was largely inspired by THE FRENCH CONNECTION. But its story, from the novel The Pig Party, draws on a Swedish source, the Geijer affair, a scandal involving the Swedish minister of justice and prostitutes. Widerberg filmed without a permit in the Stockholm subway and on the streets (including actors driving against traffic for a car chase).

“Gritty and often intense, THE MAN FROM MAJORCA is a classic of Nordic noir.”
