Directed by Jean–Pierre Melville
Starring Juliette Gréco
(1953) Following the sudden death of her parents, Juliette Gréco (legendary chanteuse and post-war existentialist icon) has to quit the convent to run the family papeterie in Cannes and to support kid sister Yvonne Sanson, who gets involved with lower-than-low lowlife Philippe Lemaire. And then rape, attempted suicide, blackmail, a rigged car accident, a one-sided love affair, and a startling conclusion ensue. Beautifully shot on location in Cannes by the great Henri Decaë. One of the rarest of Melville’s films, shown in a 35mm print imported from France especially for this series, with live subtitling. Approx. 104 min.
