Vigo’s Out-takes and Rushes
Literally, “Winter Shooting.” Vigo left behind and extraordinary number of out-takes and rushes for both Zero for Conduct and L’Atalante, inspiring over-zealous restorers in the past to add material that Vigo never intended to use. In this 96-minute program, French film critic and historian Bernard Eisenschitz, supervisor of the definitive new L’Atalante restoration, narrates as this rare material (of exceptional quality) unfolds – revealing clapboards, bloopers and glimpses of the 28-year-old Vigo. DCP. Approx. 96 min.
Restored in 4K in 2017 by Gaumont in association with Cinémathèque Française and The Film Foundation, with the support of CNC, L’Immagine Ritrovata and L’Image Retrouvée laboratories.
Presented with support from the George Fasel Memorial Fund for Classic French Cinema
Reviews
“Vigo enthusiasts shouldn’t miss 'Tournage d’hiver’ ('Winter Shooting,' 2017), in which Mr. Eisenschitz has elegantly edited newly restored rushes and outtakes from L’Atalante together with illuminating narration. His commentary captures the painstaking care and deft improvisation Vigo and his collaborators brought to creating this jewel of the filmmaker’s brief oeuvre.”
