“A DELIRIUM-INDUCING JAW-DROPPER! Is it possible to evoke this movie without invoking two dozen exclamation points?” Something like the equivalent of a pad thai Western, TEARS follows reticent, handsome bandit Dum who’s in love with Rumpoey, a high society sweetheart. Dum's gang and Rumpoey's father are keeping them apart, and thus bloody Technicolor shootouts, strings-soaked Sirk-ian melodrama, wistful gazes and pounding action ensue. Tears represents an homage to the classic Thai Westerns of the 1950s as well a modern technological achievement: the film was digitally tinted in post-production to achieve its signature, super-saturated look. Directed by Wisit Sasanatieng • Thailand • 2000 • 113 minutes • In Thai with English Subtitles • Magnolia Pictures |
