La Clef is an iconic movie theater that opened in 1973 in Paris’ Latin Quarter. When it was put up for sale and at risk of closing in 2019, a collective of film lovers organized to occupy the movie theater and keep the projectors on. Over the course of hundreds of screenings, the fight to save La Clef grew into a bigger movement that brought together audiences of thousands and artists including Martin Scorsese, Jean-Luc Godard, David Lynch, Justine Triet, Céline Sciamma, John Carpenter, and Payal Kapadia, among many others. With all of their help and after five years of hard work and countless twists and turns, La Clef Revival gathered the funds we needed to buy the movie theater and keep it from disappearing. Their mission is to keep La Clef running sustainably, true to its values: community-run, bold participatory programming, and pay-what-you-can ticket pricing.
