Introduced by Guggenheim Deputy Director & Curator Naomi Beckwith
Founded as a "museum of the future," Guggenheim New York has defined modern and contemporary art since 1959—introducing and celebrating the newest voices and visions in art and culture. The Guggenheim is also a constellation of museums—four global institutions united by the power of groundbreaking art.
In her role as Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator, Naomi Beckwith oversees collections, exhibitions, publications, and curatorial programs and archives at Guggenheim New York, and provides strategic direction within the international network of affiliate museums for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. She is the curator of two exhibitions opening this spring: Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, a groundbreaking retrospective showcasing the visionary work of one of today’s most impactful artists. Opening April 18, this exhibition of Rashid Johnson’s diverse body of work will transform the museum’s iconic rotunda, offering moments of connection, discovery, and inspiration. Collection in Focus | Faith Ringgold (May 9–September 14) dives into Ringgold’s artistic influences and the lasting impact she has had on later generations of artists. The exhibition centers on Tar Beach (1988), one of the most important works by the renowned artist, writer, and activist. This monumental quilt, the first in a series of five, tells the story of a young girl who dreams of flying from her Harlem rooftop to celebrate her own freedom and self-possession.
