AND THIS IS FREE

(1964, Mike Shea) A fly-in-the-stall’s view of Chicago’s Maxwell Street open air market, capturing its hucksters, weekend shoppers, evangelists and authentic blues singers – in the very year it was ripped down to make way for a parking lot. Shea hung out on the street for six months so that its denizens would stop playing to his camera. Digital. Approx. 50 min.

Sunday

Shot by the then-18 year old Drasin with equipment borrowed from bosses Leacock, Pennebaker and Maysles. 35mm preservation print courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Preservation funding provided by The Film Foundation. Approx. 17 min.
