National stereotypes run riot as disguised Brit Franchot Tone and French maid Anne Baxter spy on Erich von Stroheim’s Rommel in Wilder’s remake of the silent HOTEL IMPERIAL. Wilder told Stroheim, “Your films were ten years ahead of their time,” to which he replied, “Twenty!”
