U.S., 1939
Directed by Dudley Murphy
Based on the 1937 play of the same name by Arthur Arent
Starring Sylvia Sidney, Leif Erickson, Myron McCormick, Sidney Lumet
Approx. 79 min. 35mm.

After helping Sylvia Sidney take her young nephew Sidney Lumet to the hospital when he’s injured in their dilapidated tenement, boyfriend Leif Erickson finds out he’s the landlord himself. 15-year-old Sidney (in his only film appearance) repeats his stage role, with dad Baruch as Mr. Rosen.

Reviews

“Its ‘radical’ conceits—that buildings shouldn’t murder tenants, that everyone should have healthcare and a place to live—are still next to verboten in a cultural and political climate comfortable mostly with nudging compromises just this or that side of the center. For better or worse, the forthright politics of the almost 80-year-old ONE THIRD OF A NATION still carry the shock of truth.”
