RESTLESS CREATURE: WENDY WHELAN

12:30   2:30   7:00

Final Day - Tuesday, June 20

PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY LINDA SAFFIRE AND ADAM SCHLESINGER

For balletomanes worldwide, Wendy Whelan’s name conjures vivid images of ethereal beauty, coupled with sinewy, breathtaking athleticism.  Beginning ballet class as a 3-year-old in Louisville, Kentucky, she came to New York City in 1981 and spent the next 30 years as a star of the New York City Ballet. The film follows a particularly difficult period when Whelan undergoes surgery for an injury and must negotiate -- both emotionally and professionally -- for her place in the dance world. Featuring gorgeous performances from Balanchine and Robbins classics as well as ballets by Christopher Wheeldon, William Forsythe, Brian Brooks, and Alexei Ratmansky. Whelan’s disarming charm and steely determination will steal your heart.

Reviews

“Revealing. Probing. Quite moving. A candid subject at every turn. A full-bodied appreciation of her contribution to the art… enhanced by thrilling footage from celebrated pieces by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Ratmansky and Wheldon, among others. (The film is) as fluid, committed and elegant in its movements as one of Whelan’s performances.”
– David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“One of America’s most celebrated ballerinas… Whelan - strength, grace, and drama embodied - had an important story to share. An intimate view into Whelan’s journey.”
– Catherine Yang, Epoch Times
