John Cassavetes'
SHADOWS in 35mm
Monday, July 7
8:30
U.S., 1959
Directed by John Cassavetes
Starring Ben Carruthers, Lelia Goldoni, Rupert Crosse, Hugh Hurd, Anthony Ray
Approx. 87 min. 35mm.
Anthony Ray digs new girlfriend Lelia Goldoni, but prejudice kicks in when he meets her much darker African-American brother Rupert Crosse. Cassavetes' first feature evolved from an actors' workshop exercise; its improvisatory style and location shooting in Village clubs and subway stations were a revelation.

Reviews
“Rarely has so much warmth, delicacy, and raw feeling emerged so naturally and beautifully from performances in an American film.”
– Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
“So far ahead of all Hollywood and independent films that once you've seen [it] you can no longer look at the official cinema: you know that American cinema can be more sensitive and intelligent.”
– Jonas Mekas, The Village Voice
