Poland, 2009
Directed by Andrzej Wajda
Starring Krystyna Janda, Paweł Szajda
Approx. 85 mins.
An aging married woman (Krystyna Janda), who lost two sons during the war, becomes fascinated with a strapping young man she encounters one day. In this self-reflexive meditation on death, and the passion of youth, Janda breaks the film’s fourth wall with a powerful monologue on the death of her real-life husband, Edward Kłosiński (who happened to be the cinematographer of Wajda’s MAN OF MARBLE and MAN OF IRON). Experimental in structure, this moving film is itself beautifully lensed by Paweł Edelman, frequent Wajda collaborator who also shot Polański’s THE PIANIST and THE GHOST WRITER.

Reviews
“A finely detailed, astutely crafted film in miniature, a small gemstone that glistens in the memory long after the lights come up.”
