(1941, De Sica) On the run from creditors thanks to his tempestuously spendthrift nightclub star mistress Anna Magnani (in her hilarious breakthrough role), minimally competent doctor De Sica takes a job as health inspector at a girls’ orphanage, complete with a Shakespeare-quoting Adriana Benetti as the eponymous Teresa (surnamed because she arrived on a Friday). Released in the U.S. in 1951 as Doctor, Beware. Approx. 92 min. 35mm.
“A screwball romantic comedy of the first rank… De Sica carries this unflagging romp both on and off screen.”
