THE DECKS RAN RED

(1958, Andrew L. Stone) Dorothy Dandridge stars as the only woman aboard a shipload of hardy, lusty red-blooded males. Director Stone (who had guided Lena Horne in Stormy Weather) seems far more interested in her than in the plot (mutiny on a merchant freighter): he treats her as true movie goddess. With captain James Mason pitted against villainous Broderick Crawford, and mutineer Stuart Whitman hot for Dandridge. “The reactions to Dandridge’s looks are not too different from the responses of audiences of the 50s upon seeing Elizabeth Taylor in Ivanhoe.” – Donald Bogle. 35mm. Approx 84 min.
