(1958, Satyajit Ray) “What month is it?” murmurs oblivious-to-his-impending-financial-ruin, zamindar/landlord Chabhhi Biswas, even as he throws everything into a great concert in the title room. Filmed in the mansion on which the original story was based; with traditional music by Vilayat Khan. 35mm. Approx. 95 min.

Restored by the Satyajit Ray Preservation Project through a collaboration of the Academy Film Archive, the Merchant-Ivory Foundation, and the Film Foundation. Funding provided by Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“A great, flawed, maddening film – hard to take but probably impossible to forget.”
– Pauline Kael

IL POSTO

(1961, Ermanno Olmi) Hapless late adolescent Domenico goes for that “job for life” in a huge, faceless società. One problem: their cuckoo aptitude-tests-for-who-knows-what. Olmi’s second feature marked the return of neo-realism-as-it-should-be – but with a deadpan sense of humor. 35mm. Approx. 93 min.

“Olmi's modern classic.”
– Chris Peachment, Time Out (London)

“A little jewel of a picture.”
