Ashoke Ganguli (Irfan Khan) and his wife, Ashima (Tabu), escape the chaos of Calcutta in the seventies for a new life in the United States. Together with their son (Kal Penn), who was born in America, the Gangulis experience many conflicts as they adapt to their new home — but it is the unique choices this family makes that the film comes gloriously alive.

Reviews
“Tabu and Khan, both Bollywood stars, give subtle, loving performances. They never overplay, never spell out what can be said in a glance or a shrug, and communicate great passion very quietly.”
– Roger Ebert
“Conveys a palpable sense of people as living, breathing creatures who are far more complex than their words might indicate.”
– Stephen Holden, The New York Times
