Directed by Ingmar Bergman

Starring Max von Sydow

(1957, Ingmar Bergman) In one of the most famous images in film, knight Max von Sydow — back from the Crusades — plays chess with Death against a storm-ridden seascape as in a plague-ridden 14th-century Sweden he travels in quest of his wife, past wailing flagellants and a seemingly complaisant witch ready for burning. But a traveling juggler and his wife Bibi Andersson can be saved. The first of his God-haunted works established Bergman in the top ranks of contemporary directors. Shot in a single take, the famous “Dance of Death” was a split-second improvisation when the light suddenly changed and the skies grew dramatic. DCP restoration. Approx. 96 min.

New 4K Restoration courtesy of the Swedish Film Institute. Presented in association with the Ingmar Bergman Foundation.
