(1988, Hayao Miyazaki) In rural, post-war Japan, young girls Mei and Satsuki move with their father into a crumbling country home, to be closer to their hospital-bound mother. Exploring their unfamiliar surroundings, the girls discover Totoro and a whole host of friendly forest spirits, invisible to grown-ups. This Studio Ghibli favorite is an enchanting and beautifully observed study of childhood. DCP. Approx. 86 min.
Reviews
“Here is a children's film made for the world we should live in, rather than the one we occupy. A film with no villains… A world where if you meet a strange towering creature in the forest, you curl up on its tummy and have a nap.”
– Roger Ebert
