Panny z Wilka
Poland, 1979
Directed by Andrzej Wajda
Starring Daniel Olbrychski, Anna Seniuk, Christine Pascale, Maja Komorowska
Approx. 118 mins.

In Wajda’s most Chekhovian film, Wiktor, a world-weary veteran returns to the country vacation home of his youth, next to the house of five sisters—each of whom he had courted before going to fight in World War I. As he encounters the sisters anew, hoping to recapture his youth, we see how time has taken its toll.

Reviews

“One of the wisest, most civilized comedies in a long time. Features a string of superlative performances by the actresses who play the unlucky sisters, especially the one by Christine Pascal, the French actress, as the beautiful Tunia. Leaves one feeling invigorated, almost like new. Such are the astonishments of art.”
 – Vincent Canby, The New York Times

“Wistful, elegiac, seductive.”
